Grammar (or structure) is the backbone of any language; take listening for example. What happens when you listen?
When you listen, your brain tries to anticipate the next word or the next phrase, and grammar is a vital part of this anticipation. If a person understands the structure of a language, a.k.a. grammar, it makes it easier for the person to prepare for what comes next. In fact, even when the other person uses the wrong grammar, the listener’s brain may have already filled in the correct grammar and the speaker, though grammatically incorrect, is understood by the listener. A real example of this is with Japanese, where I often mistakenly use を when I should have used は or に or が. This also works when your brain gets it wrong. You anticipate that the speaker will use present tense but instead uses future tense. This ‘mistake’ by your brain will be remembered as a mistake and you, the listener, will now remember better, which translates into ‘comprehension.’
文法（または構造）はあらゆる言語のバックボーンとなるものです。例えば、リスニングを例に挙げてみましょう。
聞くとどうなるか？ 聞くとき、脳は次の単語やフレーズを予測しようとしますが、文法はこの予測の重要な部分です。言語の構造、つまり文法を理解していれば、次の言葉を予測することが容易になります。 実際、相手が間違った文法を使っていても、聞き手の脳がすでに正しい文法を埋めていて、文法的には間違っていても、話し手は聞き手に理解されていることがあるのです。その実例が日本語で、 「は」や「に」や「が」を使うべきところを、「を」と間違えて使ってしまうことがよくあります。 これは、脳が勘違いしている場合にも有効です。話し手が現在形を使うだろうと予測していたのに、代わりに未来形を使ってしまうのです。この脳の「間違い」は、間違いとして記憶され、 聞き手であるあなたの記憶力が上がり、「理解力」につながるのです。

This booklet has helped many of my students understand the reasons behind the rules, and in doing so has helped them to enjoy learning English and excel in their classes at grade school and universities. It is not my intention that this booklet (and I purposely call it a ‘booklet’) be used as a textbook. This is a reference tool in the hopes that a class can use it to quickly enhance the retention of grammatical concepts so that the class is able to focus more on the other aspects of English learning.
This booklet is not just for Japanese students, but teachers of English as well. I have had a number of teachers thanking me for giving them this booklet which they have used in their classes to explain grammatical points.
I purposely try to cut down on long explanations and instead use examples. I also repeat some points, but in a different way. I truly hope that this booklet will help you to enjoy learning (and teaching) English. I am open to comments and suggestions: chitchatschool@gmail.com.

この冊子のおかげで、多くの生徒がルールの理由を理解することができ、その結果、英語を学ぶことが楽しくなり、小学校や大学の授業で優秀な成績を収めることができました。 この小冊子（あえて「小冊子」と呼びます）を教科書として使うことは私の意図するところではありません。あくまでも、文法的な概念の定着を早急に図り、その分、他の英語学習に集中 できるようなクラスにしていただきたいという思いから、この参考書を作成しました。
この冊子は、日本の学生だけでなく、英語を教える先生方にもおすすめです。多くの先生方から 「この冊子を贈ってくれてありがとう」と感謝され、授業で文法的なポイントを説明するのに使っています。
